SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM
The world of Grace Jones
by Maria Raposo
Grace Jones: one time model, fashion icon and disco and new wave goddess, Jones created an extreme yet timeless image of herself. Using the sharp angularity of her natural features to her advantage, her overt expressions of sexuality were juxtaposed with her androgynous appearance. Her look was not intended to please or satisfy men; rather she embraced this forceful and intimidating image, saying: “my image is supposed to frighten men - so only the good ones come through.”
She rebelled, first against her strictly religious upbringing in Jamaica, and later against the expectations of society: “Either I go in the opposite direction or I create a new direction for myself, regardless of what the rules are or what society says.” She is like no other, influencing today’s celebrities, most notably Lady Gaga and Rihanna, she is still fierce and a true original.
